Commuters who went to aid of a fatally stabbed man in central Auckland yesterday were "heroes", police have said.
Forty-four year old Devonport resident and IAG broker manager, Austin Bernard Hemmings was fatally stabbed while going to the aid of a woman who had allegedly been punched in the face.
At a media conference this morning, Detective Senior Sergeant Gerry Whitley paid tribute to those who helped.
"There were a lot of heroes here that showed that community-minded spirit," he said.
