During the latter stages of the U.S. campaign for president, public opinion surveys picked up stonger than expected support for Barack Obama in many places. While political experts say economic troubles helped the Democratic Party nominee, they cite another factor. Obama's campaign has actively pursued voters even in locales Republican nominee John McCain is expected to win.

Early on it seemed that President George W. Bush would join Sen. John McCain on the campaign trail. As Bill Plante reports, once Mr. Bush's approval rating dropped, he was dropped by McCain.

Palin Abused Power in Troopergate An Alaskan state investigation into Sarah Palin's involvement in the firing of State Trooper Mike Wooten has concluded that Palin violated the state Ethics Act by allowing her husband Todd Palin to use the resources of the Governors office to press for the firing of Wooten. After initially withholding specific emails from investigator Stephen Branchflower the investigation continued. Desptie bogus claims that the investigation was done for political reasons and intense pressure from Palin and her supporters, the Republican dominated Alaskan Legislative Council held their ground and voted unanimously to release the report. This damning report of Sarah Palins unethical behavior during her short time as governor of Alaska will no doubt have enormous political ramifications for the upcoming election.

New polls show Barack Obama has a nine-point lead over John McCain. Meanwhile, Congress scores its lowest approval rating since CBS started asking in 1977. Nancy Cordes reports.
