Big Freeze Continues to Grip Britain: More Snow Forecast

South Korea warns north over attack

South Korea's president has threatened "enormous retaliation" against North Korea if there is any further aggression against his country, just hours after scores of northern artillery shells hit Yeonpyeong, a South Korean island. At least two soldiers were killed, 19 others injured, and many houses set ablaze on Tuesday in what appeared to be one of the most serious border incidents since the 1950-53 Korean war. The South Korean military was placed on its highest state of alert and troops fired back with their own artillery. Both countries claimed the other had triggered the clashes. A suicide bomber struck a mosque in north west Pakistan, killing 50 people and leaving around 80 injured. Officials say the target may have been a member of Pakistan's Senate who had encouraged people to oppose the Taliban. The targeted prayer session took place in an area where the Taliban has recently gained ground. In a separate attack, a second mosque was bombed near the city of Peshawar, wounding several people.

Parcel-bomb 'mastermind' revealed

US and Yemeni authorities have named the man they believe to be the mastermind of the parcel bombs plot. They have issued photographs of Saudi Arabian born Ibrahim al-Asiri. He is thought to be al-Qaeda's top explosives expert in Yemen. Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra reports from Sanaa in Yemen.
