Boney M frontman found dead in Russia

The music world is mourning the death of Bobby Farrell. The frontman of the disco and pop group Boney M was found dead in a hotel room in St Petersburg. One day earlier he had performed in the city and reportedly complained of feeling unwell. There is no word yet on his cause of death. Boney M was put together by the German singer-songwriter Frank Farian. The group rose to stardom with such hits as "Ma Baker", "Rivers of Babylon" and "Rasputin".

Europe's difficult Christmas continues

Awful weather conditions have returned to Poland, with frozen roads and railway lines. More than 20,000 people in Pomerania are without electricity after power lines snapped under the weight of ice. Several roofs have collapsed under the snow. Moscow has been hit with freezing rain which has made roads and pavements dangerously slippery. It has also caused traffic chaos, with 2000 kilometres of traffic jams reported around the capital as people try to go shopping for next weekend's Orthodox Christmas.

Arrests prompt fears Netherlands is prime terror target

There are fears the Netherlands has become a prime target for terrorists following the arrest of 12 Somali nationals suspected of plotting an imminent strike. The men were detained in Rotterdam on Christmas Eve following a tip off from security services. Dutch counter-terrorism experts believe the country's former military role in Afghanistan under NATO and its anti-Muslim Freedom party may have made it more vulnerable.

A U.S. diplomatic cable from March 2009 made public by Wikileaks has revealed details of a meeting between Australia's then-Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and U.S Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. It took place at a White House luncheon where Rudd and Clinton exchanged views on China's political power and its influence on both nations. The document revealed Rudd saying he's a, quote, "brutal realist" when it comes to China. He also said Chinese leaders are, quote, "paranoid" about Taiwan and Tibet—and are using a hard-line approach to Tibet to set an example for other ethnic minorities. Foreign fighters bolster Taliban

The Afghan Taliban is recruiting and training a growing number of foreign fighters, Al Jazeera has learned. The move comes as David Cameron, the UK prime minister, said British troops could start withdrawing as early as 2011 due to the progress being made in the fight against the Taliban. During an unannounced visit to Afghanistan's Helmand province on Tuesday, the prime minister said there were "grounds for cautious optimism" that efforts to restore security and governance were sufficiently on track to begin reducing the force level.
