Thousands hit Brussels streets in 'No to Austerity' protest (raw video)

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in Brussels on Wednesday, just as in capitals elsewhere in Europe, to protest pension reform and austerity packages. The protests were organized by European trade union group ETUC and included demonstrators from several European countries. Belgian media reported that nearly 150 people had been arrested.

'Iraqis should be paid trillions by US as compensation for invasion'

Well the violence in Iraq is not abating after the departure of U.S. combat troops. 9 Iraqi soldiers have just been killed by a roadside bomb in the latest attack. Talking about the reparations, Abdel Bari Atwan, editor-in-chief of the Al-Quds Al-Arabi newspaper, says it's the Iraqis who should be getting compensation from the U.S., not the other way round.

Julia Gillard Sworn in as Australia's Prime Minister

Australia's first female Prime Minister and her cabinet are sworn in to office today. Her opponent, former prime minister Kevin Rudd, has been appointed to the job of Foreign Minister. Julia Gillard and her new cabinet were sworn in at Government House in Canberra on Tuesday. In front of Governor-General Quentin Bryce, Ms. Gillard signed a document and swore allegiance to Queen Elizabeth II, as family members looked on. Her pledge of allegiance was followed by the swearing-in of 19 cabinet ministers, 10 ministers and 12 parliamentary secretaries. Former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was among those sworn in as Foreign Minister. Ms. Gillard ousted Rudd from the top job on June 24 to become Australia's first elected female prime minister. She then had to endure a federal election which resulted in a "hung" parliament as neither major party gained a majority vote. Gillard gained the support of three independents and a Green MP to muster the seats required to form government.

As Kenyans look forward to a smooth implementation of the new constitution, a group youth rounded up twenty people who have allegedly gone for months without taking a shower and showed them what they need to do for a new country. The group claimed that the victims are lowering the image of Nyeri town. One of them was taken to hospital for an operation after it was discovered that he is not circumcised.

Anti-Islam sentiment on the rise

Amnesty International asys anti-Islam sentiment is on the rise in the US. The human rights group has pointed to rising crimes committed against Muslims in the country including the stabbing of a cab driver in New York and attacks on mosque sites around the country. Is Islamphobia motivated by politics? Or is it just exaggerated and blown out of proportion by the world's media?

Violent Quran burning protests leave 11 injured in Afghanistan

At least 11 people were injured in Afghanistan as thousands protested plans by a tiny Florida church to burn the Muslim holy book. 4 protesters and 5 police were injured in clashes after several hundred demonstrators ran toward a NATO compound in the northern province of Badakhshan. In western Farah province, police said two people were injured in another protest. The Reverend Terry Jones from the Dove Outreach Center in Florida triggered outrage when he promised to burn the Quran on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. He later said the plans had been put on hold.

Russia Remembers: Video of 9/11 memorial service in Moscow church

The US Ambassador to Russia, John Beyrle, attended a memorial service held in Moscow's Saint Catherine's Church on Saturday for the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon in the US. In his speech at the memorial service, Ambassador Beyrle said Russia and the U.S. were allies in the fight against what he called 'world terrorism'. Beyrle said that people were mourning the victims of all terror acts around the world. He also mentioned the recent attack in the Russia's south. A suicide car bomber hit the central market of a major city in Russia's North Caucasus on Thursday, killing 17 and wounding more than 140 people.

Controversy over Quran burning plan

A Florida pastor says he is still determined to burn copies of the Quran on September 11, despite an international outcry. The Vatican has described Pastor Terry Jones' plans as "outrageous and grave", while Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, says the act would not be representative of America or Americans. But the leader of the small Protestant church says he is not ready to back down. Al Jazeera's Monica Villamizar reports.

Boxer jailed after killing man with one punch - CCTV

BBC News - 'One punch' boast killer from Oldham jailed: "A 22-year-old who boasted that he possessed 'a killer punch' has been jailed for killing a man with just one blow outside a Greater Manchester pub. Louis Veitch attacked Andrew Molloy, 25, by Old Mess House in Oldham on 15 March. Manchester Crown Court heard he punched his victim in the side of the head with such force it knocked him over. Veitch, who earlier admitted manslaughter, was jailed for six-and-a-half-years. He was also given an extra three years on licence under the Dangerous Offenders Act 2003."
