Sweden's ex-police chief jailed over sex crimes

He used to lecture people on how to deal with sexual harassment and violence, and was seen as Swedish police's top expert on morality and ethics. Now Goran Lindberg, the former head of Sweden's national police academy, is serving time in jail for rape and other sex crimes in what has been dubbed by judges as "sadistic sexual violence". Lindberg has denied the charges and his lawyers say they will appeal the six-year sentence, but the story has shocked pretty much anyone who hears about it, as Stefanie Dekker reports. Scores killed in Pakistan plane crash

A passenger aircraft has crashed on the outskirts of the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, killing all 152 people on board. Reports suggest air traffic controllers had told the pilot to divert due to the poor weather, but lost contact with the plane shortly after. Al Jazeera's Tarek Bazely reports.

US criticises Wikileaks release of Afghan war documents

The White House has condemned the leaks of more than 90,000 classified documents on the war in Afghanistan posted by the whistleblower website, Wikileaks. The Pentagon earlier called the release "criminal", and said it could take weeks to assess any damage that the leaks may have caused. Rosiland Jordan reports on Washington's reaction to what is now being called the Afghan war logs.

Nineteen people were killed and 45 seriously injured at the Love Parade in the city of Duisburg north of Dusseldorf yesterday. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) says a 27-year-old woman from New South Wales died in the crush of people who surged through an entry tunnel. Cousteau Returns to Gulf to Survey Oil Damage

Iranian man alleges "US abduction"

UK manhunt ends with seized fugitive suicide

In England a fugitive gunman killed himself after a week-long manhunt and stand-off with armed officers. He had been on the run after allegedly shooting his ex-girlfriend and killing her new partner, he was also accused of shooting a policeman. He was discovered in the northeast of the country, where officers tried to negotiate with him for six hours. Reports say a single shot was heard, after which paramedics drove him to hospital where he later died.
